Why should I choose Supported Independent Living?
You can live in your own accommodation or in one of our shared accommodations with others in our Supported Independent Living (SIL). Drop-in support is available if you live in your own accommodation and require assistance with daily activities.
SIL is a type of NDIS support in which a person with disability lives with other people. Many people with disabilities are unable to live independently and require assistance in their daily lives. People with disabilities will receive assistance with daily tasks such as cleaning, cooking, and personal care as part of these supports.
What are the Benefits of Supported Accommodation
The NDIS gives people with disabilities more control and options in their lives. If living independently is one of the goals of people with disabilities, SIL can help them achieve that goal. Support Nest Disability Services assists eligible individuals in achieving independence.
- Opportunity to have your own space and practice tasks on your own
- Assistance with any activity you’re attending so you can feel safe and confident
- You will receive quality support from our experienced support workers
- Take on new challenges in a different environment
- If you choose to live with others, you can make genuine connections with kind and friendly people
- Find things that make you happy or work on new hobby
Who is suitable for supported living?
Supported Independent Living services are available to individuals with disabilities who prefer not to reside in residential care but have difficulty living alone or relying on others.
When it comes to living alone, everyone has unique requirements. There are three funding levels available for SIL under the NDIS:
- Lower needs – needs typically do not necessitate 24×7 support. The living arrangements of residents are monitored
- Standard needs – a support service is available around-the-clock. Support workers sleep overnight and oversee the majority of daily tasks
- Higher needs – an active support system is available 24/7. Staff members are responsible for assisting with daily tasks and managing challenging behaviour, among other responsibilities.
You may benefit from Supported Independent Living or a higher level of assistance, depending on your needs. You can discuss this with the NDIS provider in your area.
How can participants receive supported independent living under their NDIS plan?
A participant, like all other NDIS supports, must be eligible for the SIL supports. When participants attend their planning meeting to obtain SIL funding, NDIS will ask them specific questions to determine whether or not they are eligible for the assistance.
If a participant has a new goal to explore home and living options or a change in circumstances, they are encouraged to complete a Home and Living supporting evidence form.
Your NDIA planner may also speak with people who are close to you and have knowledge of your daily needs, such as family members and carers. This will enable the NDIA in understanding your current situation as well as your home and living goals. It will also assist them in determining whether SIL is the best option for you.If the NDIA determines that SIL is the best funding option for you, the next exciting step is to select a SIL service provider.
Finding the right SIL provider
Most people who receive SIL are also eligible for Support Coordination funding. Your Support Coordinator can assist you in scheduling appointments with health providers so they can assess your needs and help you locate the best SIL provider to help you achieve your goals.
To ensure that your needs are met, you may need to speak with multiple SIL providers. The support workers who work in the home are managed and screened by SIL providers. Some SIL providers also have a vehicle on hand to arrange transportation for social activities or other community events. While you may receive SIL support in your own home, it is more likely that you will receive SIL in a shared home with other SIL participants.
That is why it is critical to meet with a variety of SIL providers. This will allow you and your Support Coordinator to tour the facility. You can also enquire about the property, the neighbourhood, and the other residents who will be sharing the home and the services with you.
